2015 Summer Institute

The Manna Center's Food Safety & Security Summer Institute took place July 5-24, 2015 at Tel Aviv University and included over 150 Israeli and international students.

The Food Safety & Security Summer Institute took place during July 5th - 24th at Tel Aviv University and included over 150 Israeli and international students from diverse educational backgrounds. Students came from countries such as Vietnam, China, Nigeria, Madagascar and India, in order to study in courses related to the various fields of food safety and security.  Students attended lectures, workshops, and fieldtrips given by experts from all over the world, as well as from Tel Aviv University.

 

During the first week of the institute, the course "Introduction to Food Security" was held. The course included a fieldtrip to see real life examples of food security in the field, ranging from modernized irrigation systems to reforestration efforts in semiarid regions. Visits included the Naan Dan Jain Irrigation Company in Kibbutz Naan, Southern R&D Station at the Besor Farm, KKL Nursery at Gilat and Yatir Forest. Students also had the opportunity to get a tour of the botanical garden at Tel Aviv University to view the plant life that is a part of the Israel’s natural environment firsthand.  

 

Other courses included: Food Security and Public Health, Plant Signaling in Changing Environments and Food Security Policy and Economics, Plant Molecular Breeding, and Bioethics.
