Congratulations to Prof. Adi Stern from the Shmunis School of Biomedicine and Cancer Research at the Wise Faculty of Life Sciences who was chosen as a member of the Israel Young Academy.

Prof. Stern’s research focuses on the evolution of pathogens. She analyses variations in DNA sequences by the help of computational tools and thus discovers the rules which dictate their evolutionary development. With the COVID-19 outbreak Prof. Stern sequenced for the first time the genome of the virus in the form in which it appeared in Israel. Sequencing allows researchers to identify specific mutations which can indicate infection transmission patterns and the virus’ movement paths to Israel from abroad, and inside the country.

The Israel Young Academy was established by the Israel National Academy of Sciences. The members are chosen based on their academic excellence and leadership in their research field, as part of the Young Academy’s regulations.
