TAU experts participate in the Borlaug Summit on Wheat for Food Security in Mexico

Prof. Amir Sharon, head of the Institute of Cereal Crop Improvement and Dr. Eitan Millet, a wheat geneticist working on development of disease-resistant wheat represented Tel Aviv University at the Borlaug Global Rust Initiative (BGRI) 2014 meeting in Ciudad Obregon, Mexico. The Borlaug Summit on Food Security was organized by CIMMYT – the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center in collaboration with PIEAES (or Patronato) – the Association for Agricultural Research and Experimentation of the State of Sonora and held on March 22-28, 2014, timed to coincide with the Borlaug100 celebrations.

 

The Institute of Cereal Crop Improvement has been in the forefront of research on global wheat rust and has developed a unique strain of wheat that is resistant the devastating fungus.

 

The event included over 600 participants from the academy, philanthropic agencies such as the Bill and Melinda Gates and the Buffet foundations, public sector and private companies.
